How to Eat Alone at a Restaurant

Tips for enjoying your own company (and your food) while eating out solo

Do you want to go to a restaurant and enjoy food you wouldn’t make at home? Or try a new place that looks really good—but no one is available to go with you?

This post is here to convince you to go anyway.

Don’t postpone experiences just because no one can join you. Eating alone can actually be one of the most enjoyable and freeing experiences.

Here are some tips for eating out confidently by yourself::

Dress up nicely for yourself

Treat it like you’re taking yourself out on a date. Just as you would dress up to go out with someone else, give yourself that same energy and effort. It naturally boosts your confidence when you feel like your best self.

You can also look up photos of the restaurant’s interior on Google Maps and similar platforms beforehand to get a sense of the atmosphere and what people typically wear. That way, you can decide whether you want to blend in—or stand out.

Choose your seating wisely

Where you sit can completely change your experience eating out alone.

Opt for places like:

  • the bar

  • a high-top table

  • a window seat

These setups make it feel more natural to be alone since you’d normally be sitting side-by-side with someone, not across from them.

Sitting at the bar or near activity also gives you something to focus on, like:

  • watching the bartender mix drinks

  • a live performance
    a game playing on TV

If possible, choose a window seat. It allows you to people-watch, enjoy the scenery, or use your phone while facing outward, which can help you feel less self-conscious.

Try to avoid large tables that are meant for groups. This helps you avoid feeling like you’re “waiting for someone” and also prevents you from feeling rushed if the restaurant is busy.

Take advantage your time alone

If there’s no entertainment around you, use the time intentionally.

You can:

  • catch up on emails

  • call a loved one

  • organize your calendar
    journal

  • watch your favorite streaming show or YouTube videos

If you prefer not to use your phone, that’s completely fine. Take in the atmosphere of the restaurant, observe the decorations, or simply enjoy your food without distractions.

Don’t be afraid to take photos or videos

Unless indicated otherwise, you’re allowed to document your experience!

Take photos of:

  • your food

  • the restaurant

  • even yourself

Just be mindful not to include other people too obviously in your shots.

If the lighting is low, don’t hesitate to use flash for your food. Most people understand you’re just trying to capture the moment, and in many cases, no one will say anything.

If you’d like a photo of yourself that isn’t a selfie, don’t hesitate to ask a waiter or hostess to take it for you. As long as they’re not busy serving tables or carrying food, they’ll usually be happy to help. From the restaurant’s perspective, your photos can also act as free word-of-mouth promotion.

Remember: no one is paying attention to you.

This is the most important part.

Most people are focused on themselves—their conversations, their food, or even their own awkwardness. They’re not analyzing you.

If anything, someone who notices you is more likely thinking that you’re confident to be eating by yourself or they’re simply curious about you.

And if someone is paying attention… that’s a completely different story for another blog post!

Final Thoughts

Next time you want to try a restaurant but hesitate because you’re alone, just go.

Eating alone is completely normal, and most people don’t think twice about it. In fact, being solo can even work in your favor because you’ll often find it easier to get a table or skip reservations entirely.
